Two years ago some were suggesting that Real Mallorca could disappear as a football club. Mallorca were languishing in the lower echelons of the Spanish league with gates of below 10,000 and heavy debts.

Two years later and Real Mallorca beat the big spenders of Real Madrid in front of a capacity crowd at the Son Moix in a Spanish First Division fixture. Mallorca were the talking point of Spain on Sunday for all the right reasons. The revolution which has occured at the local team has come about not thanks to a massive cash injection but by careful management on all fronts. Credit must go to the American owners of Real Mallorca who have presided over one of the biggest rags to riches tales in recent history of Spanish football.

As my dear colleague, Monro Bryce, says in his match report in today’s newspaper it was a match which local fans will remember for many years. Monro has stuck with Mallorca through thick and thin and to be honest there has probaby been more thin than thick over recent years!

But Monro has been there as a true fan and always had the belief that Mallorca would return to the First Division and would enjoy nights like the one which we saw in Palma on Saturday. This was a big night and a big win for Mallorca. Hopefully, the small army of Real Madrid fans on the island may now consider Mallorca in a better light and may even start supporting their local team. But above all, congrats Mallorca and congrats Monro.
