INCA - FIESTAS POPULARES - CELEBRACION DE LA FIESTA DE SANTA MARIA LA MAJOR. | E. BALLESTERO
The fiestas for Santa Maria la Major in Inca are fiery, to say the least.
The first bonfire for the fiestas will be lit at half eight. Soon after, bonfires will be lit all over Inca, and at 11pm there will be demons' hellishness.
The Inc'Fern correfoc rivals what Palma can put on for the Saint Sebastian fiestas in January and for the Nit de Foc of midsummer. A host of demons' gangs will gather for the fire-running from Plaça Quartera to Plaça Espanya.
Once upon a time, these fiestas were on August 15 - the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As parish records were destroyed by fire (aptly perhaps), it's unknown exactly when they were moved; but certainly by the second half of the 17th century.
They partly explain why Inca's fourth fair, Dijous Bo, is on a Thursday, as the fiestas and fair couldn't clash.
