Jeff Ballard is one of America's top jazz drummers.
He has played with greats like Ray Charles, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. Now 60, he started playing drums at the age of 14, and attended college in California to study music theory, his breakthrough coming at the age of 19 when he teamed up with double bassist Larry Grenadier before joining Ray Charles' band.
The Alternatilla Jazz Festival in Mallorca starts this Friday. The first concert is in Llucmajor and the second is in Inca, where Jeff Ballard will be in the band led by Belgian trumpet player Jean-Paul Estiévenart.
Belgium is the featured country for this year's festival, Estiévenart having established himself as a key figure on Belgium's jazz scene in his early twenties - he's now 38. For the festival, there will be a quintet of double bass, sax and piano as well as drums and trumpet.
