When Jethro Tull performed on Top of the Pops in June 1969, it’s fair to say that they caused a bit of comment.

Who was the chap with the coat and beard, standing on one leg, singing and playing the flute? It was of course Ian Anderson, the sole surviving member of the band which, by the time that ‘Living in the Past’ was a perhaps unlikely number three hit in the UK, was becoming identified with the progressive rock scene.

They were to have further success in the singles chart but, as was the case with prog-rock bands, were more focused on the albums chart. ‘Stand Up’ in 1969 was the only number one in the UK, but ‘Benefit’, ‘Aqualung’ and ‘Thick as a Brick’ all made the top five.

Having not released a studio album for twenty years, they returned to the charts with ‘The Zealot Game’, which peaked at number nine in 2022. The latest is ‘RökFlöte’.

In Palma in February, the tickets are selling well, so if you want to make sure of seeing them, now is the time.
