Shakura S’Aida is a Canadian actress who was in fact born in Brooklyn.
Her acting roles have included a part in the recent Batwoman TV series. But she is better known as a blues and jazz singer, pre-eminent in Canada, where she has been nominated on numerous occasions for the Juno Awards and the Maple Blues Awards. She was female vocalist of the year in 2010.
Her collaborations over the years have included ones with Patti LaBelle, the ‘Godmother of Soul’, and with Jimmy Smith, the American jazz musician who popularised the Hammond organ in creating the fusion between jazz and soul.
Hers will be the first concert for Mallorca Jazz Sa Pobla 2023. As is now the arrangement for the festival, there are small entrance charges for the concerts, but not for the opening concert, which is free.
