Origin is one of my “go to” places for drinks in Palmanova and more specifically in the Son Matias beach area. Whether I was there for a girls night out or a work meeting, I enjoy the cocktails, a glass of wine or just a cortado with a stunning view of the bay. The other day I took some family and there was live music by a young Italian guy. My cousin asked for some song she knew – Piccolo Grande Amore – and we really enjoyed his performance. It was then that it dawned on me that I have still never eaten there, so we decided to return the next day to try their menu del dia.

Served between 1pm and 3pm, Origin’s menu del dia includes a selection of starters, mains and deserts as well as water and one drink that can be soft, wine, beer or even a cocktail. I have never heard of a cocktail being included in the daily menu so that was a nice option, but in the end I went with a glass of good cold verdejo.

For a starter I chose Red pepper, tomato and basil soup. This was so incredibly delicious that I would have happily had another bowl and nothing else, was I not here on a mission. My cousin’s wife tried it and proclaimed that it was the best soup she has ever tasted. She even got the recipe from the chef with the help of our lovely waitress Ylva, who I also knew from her days at now closed Superfood Garden. Mallorca is a small place and Palmanova even smaller when it comes to who you know.

The mains all looked supper appealing, including a meat and a fish option, but I went with beetroot tagliatelle, as I have never tried that before. Plus, Ylva mentioned that they were homemade. The dish was made with sage oil, pine nits, cherry tomatoes and spinach. I loved this too and would gladly have it again. My cousin and his wife agreed, but we refrained from asking for another recipe.

While I enjoyed the set menu, my family went with some iberico ham, a selection of local cheeses and a basket full of freshly baked, still worm focaccia. It was their second day here and they were in love with Mallorca’s gastronomic scene already!

For desert there were three options, each just as appealing as the other. After a lengthy deliberation, I went with a dark chocolate tart and they shared a pavlova with a raspberry coulis and pistachio cream. Again, both of these were excellent and we would come back just for them.

Many places around Palma and South West of Mallorca have some good daily menus, but this one was head and shoulders above many of them, both in terms of taste and the presentation. It was well worth a slightly higher price tag of 26.50 euros. Especially considering that I could have even picked a cocktail to drink.

One of the owners, Mark, was around so we got chatting a bit. I was delighted to hear that they will be opened for most of the year (take note!) with just a few short breaks here and there. Mark and Ylva also told me about their Christmas plans for Origin, and it will be something truly unique on the island, perfect for groups of up to eight people or a very special date. Watch this space and follow me on Instagram to find out more about those exciting news as well as many cool new places I am planning to review in the coming months.

Meanwhile, if – like me, you have somehow not yet eaten at origins, I urge you to try it and make up your own mind about the location, their food and their staff. I bet any money you will agree with me!
