GRAFFITI is not just a problem in Calvia. It can be found all over Majorca, and, indeed, in many other countries. Some people consider it art, and this was one of the reasons why the previous Calvia council built special areas for the budding artists. But that idea has backfired and any large empty space is an irresistible temptation to the spray-can gang. It will be impossible to post a policeman at every empty space the graffiti artists may target, and fines, in the unlikely event of the culprits being caught, will probably not be much of a deterrent. They certainly haven't worked with dog owners who allow their pets to foul the pavement. Awareness campaigns are all too often a lost cause. Perhaps better education and teaching children from an early age to respect their environment would work to better effect.
