TO all those connected with the decision to let London's Notting Hill Carnival go ahead at the Bank Holiday weekend despite worries about a repeat of the August rioting in London. If it had been cancelled this year it might never have been restarted. A total of 170 arrests may not sound too good but it was down from 230 last year and 448 the year before. The police were there in force and claimed they received thanks from the crowds for their presence. According to one report the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, was “embraced” when he joined the crowd!
