Palma.—The 30'000 nautical mile Global Ocean Race Village was officially opened yesterday in front of the Auditorium, which is where the race will start from on September 25 and finish some eight or nine months later! The village will be free to the public with the goal of introducing visitors to the sport of ocean racing and promoting young artists from the island.
The Race Village covers area of approximately 1'000 sqm and is divided in two areas. One section for events and presentations with a second area designated for official institutions, Village sponsors, the GOR Race Office and the GOR Media Centre. Apart from the village being designed to give people an insight into the grueling yacht race, which for the time being is going to be based in Palma for the foreseeable future and take part every two years, a host of events have been organised to raise funds for local charities as well as the Global Vision Sailing Trust. This is a UK based organisation aimed at helping introduce under privileged children to sailing. An estimated 60'000 people are expected to pass through the village for the regatta which is going to become one of the most important sporting events in Majorca as it develops. All eyes will also be on local yachtsman Hugo Ramon and his co-skipper Conrad Colman from New Zealand in the “Mallorca Challenge” team.
