By Jason Moore ALTHOUGH they have only been in power for six months the new local government has broken at least two election promises. Francina Amengol, leader of the Balearic government, said that the rubbish disposal rates would not rise infact they would fall during a key election speech. This week her council approved a rise of 25 percent.

The leader of the Balearic Government, Francesc Antich, said that the new hospital would not be built at Son Espases on the outskirts of Palma...now it appears more than likely that it will be built there. These broken promises do little to improve the image of the leading local authorities. Politicians are not exactly respected at the best of times and the two cases which I have mentioned above does not help this state of affairs. I think politicians from across the political spectrum should not say one thing when they are in opposition and another when they are in government. I was looking the other day at all the promises which were made by the politicial parties at local government, Council of Majorca and local council level during the election campaign. I would say that the majority still have to be implemented. If public faith in politicians is restored then perhaps there will be a greater turnout in elections. But to do that politicians have to live-up to their words.
