LAST weekend I was in Pollensa which I consider to be one of Majorca´s finest tourist destinations. I was talking to a shopkeeper in the port who was telling me that she was going to close down for the winter shortly simply because all hotels in the area would be shut for the low period.

Isn´t it a shame that more hotels are not encouraged to remain open during the winter months because I am sure that shops, bars and restaurants would follow their lead.

Eventhough it was nearly the end of October there were still a relatively large number of tourists about. Ok, it wasn´t August but the few tourists who were milling about were certainly taking advantage of what Pollensa has to offer. I am sure that many would return in a few months time if they realised that businesses would be open. That is the problem with Majorca at the moment. There are no flights and therefore hotels close for the winter and so do shops, bars and restaurants. If only an effort was made I am sure that the winter could be very different in Majorca. The local authorities should be holding talks with airlines so that they continue to operate to Majorca during the low period. I sincerely believe that a golden opportunity is being lost.
