Dear Sir,

RE: CONCERN OF MINORCAN PARENTS

ITS not surprising, but nevertheless disturbing, to read that parents in Minorca are very concerned regarding the Balearic Ministry of Education's imposition of teaching in Catalan, at the exclusion of the official language of Spain i.e. Castellano. Ever more worrying is the comment “if you don't like it send your children to the Peninsula to be educated”.

Whilst agreeing that they would probably receive an education that would stand them in better stead for the world on which they will be living - most parents can't afford it - and why should they.

The Balearic government collects taxes from its citizens and along with extra moneys from Madrid these go to pay for education/health etc. I for one, can't believe, that when funding is discussed with Madrid, it is conducted in Catalan! It seems local government is totally oblivious to the potential harm being done both to its educational and health service, by the imposition of Catalan.

Those persons of a more progressive mind i.e. the staff at Son Dureta, are already voicing their concern - it's time for like minded parents to unite, and let this “verging on the xenophobic” government know, they will not stand for their children being given a second rate/third world education. People power can work wonders.

Yours Sincerely,

M Irving
