This year two students in our Year 10 class, Charley and Alana approached us before half term with the idea of celebrating International Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8 in order to raise awareness amongst the school community. As purple is the colour symbolising women, they encouraged us to wear something purple on Tuesday to show support towards women’s equality.

Friday the secondary students enjoyed a cinema afternoon to watch Suffragette followed by a discussion about the film.

Alana and Charley took over our Friday Secondary assembly from Ms Millars office. They inspired us all with their presentation and passion for taking action.

Thank you to Alana and Charley for all their efforts and their fantastic assembly.

Here is an excerpt from their presentation:

Internationals women’s day is celebrated every year on March 8th to spread the message of women’s equality. It aims to highlight achievements made by women throughout the world. It encourages women to fight for their rights and against gender discrimination in modern society.

It is important to understand the real meaning of feminism, as many people mistake it with women wanting to have more rights or hating men. Feminism, by definition, is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.

Internationals women’s day is celebrated every year on March 8th to spread the message of women’s equality.

Each year International Women’s Day has a different theme to it. This year it is “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable World”.

Thank you to Alana and Charley for all their efforts and their fantastic assembly.
