“IF things don´t improve soon, will the last person to leave Majorca please turn the light off.” This is how one leading businessman summed-up Majorca at the moment with record unemployment, few winter flights and even fewer tourists. The other day I took a walk around Magalluf and Palmanova and I was shocked to see how empty it was...you can count the bars and restaurants which are open on a single hand. The major tour operators have all scaled back their winter programmes and the majority of hotels are closed.

So is there a way forward for Majorca or is the businessman I have mentioned above right? Well ofcourse there is a way forward but it is going to take time and money and plenty of imagination. In some ways the brand Majorca, needs to be reinvented. Ridiculous laws like the matriculation tax on yachts need to be scrapped and golf courses need to look at their green fee prices. Majorca also needs to try and re-invent itself as a winter holiday destination with shopping and eating out being two of the major attractions. This year is going to be exceptionally hard but it could also be the year when all the wrongs of the past were corrected. Majorca, obviously has a great future but change is needed.
