THERE is winter tourism on Majorca! Some of Britain´s best cyclists are using the island as a training camp based around Alcudia and they couldn´t speak more highly of the island and its facilities. Infact it turns out that Majorca is a paradise for cyclists. What I would like to know is why the local authorities are not shouting from the roof tops and telling anyone who will listen that Sir Bradley Wiggins trains on the island? This is fantastic promotion for Majorca which will not cost a single penny. Team Sky and the Great Britain cycling team are all on the island at the moment. Earlier this week they held a “media day” which was attended by journalists from all over the world. But not a word from the Balearic government. Why not promote cycling holidays in the north of the island during the winter holidays? Thanks to the success of Team Sky and the British Olympic Cycling Team cycling is becoming ever more popular in Britain. The Balearic government is always saying that there is more to Majorca than just its beaches and the sun. So why does the sun and sea always form the basis of their promotion campaigns? Why not cycling? I am sure that it could make a difference during the winter months and keep hotels, shops and bars open for business. The Majorcan tourist industry doesn´t need a multi-million euro budget. All it needs is a bit of imagination and common sense which is sadly lacking at the moment. Another opportunity missed?
