To members of the Ulster Volunteer Force who broke the peace between Protestants and Catholics in the Short Strand area of Belfast. Shots were fired and petrol and smoke bombs, bricks and stones were the weapons used and it was only by chance that casualties were few. The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that UVF members had prepared for the disturbances. The old days of routine religious summer tensions in Belfast are over and must not be brought back.
