By Monitor SOME sections of the Spanish media showed the same sort of stupidity as the British tabloid press of old this week. One leading Spanish newspaper in banner headlines said that Spain would “Retire Zidane.” The French captain is due to step-down from international duty after this World Cup and Spain were convinced that this was going to be his last match. Unfortunately, for Spain, the French skipper didn't particularly like the headline and scored an absolutely fantastic goal after playing the whole match...not bad for a man who is on the verge of retirement! And then there was the rather unfortunate incident involving Spanish manager Luis Aragones and French striker Henry. Two years ago, the Spanish national coach, was heard allegedly making some rather racist comments against the Arsenal ace, his alleged statements came back to haunt him again on Tuesday night with Henry playing a key role in France's victory. But the Arsenal striker didn't stop there, he claimed that Spanish fans were disrespectful and he claimed that they made “monkey” noises at some of France's coloured players. All in all these incidents have rather marred a fantastic football clash betwen two great footballing nations. I doubt that the French have taken any real offence after all the hours before and after a World Cup football match are always rather tense to say the least but hopefully the Spanish have rather learnt their lesson.
