A major coup for the Balearics. By signing up Michael Douglas the Balearics is assured of great publicity and will always be the centre of attention at the major tourism trade fairs. I've always thought that the Balearics was missing some muscle when officials go on their travels across Europe to sell these islands in an extremely competitive market-place. It always appeared to me that other competing destinations had the edge. No more. With Douglas aboard the good ship Balearics is sailing in the right direction. The deal will always be controversial. Douglas is being paid in excess of 4 million euros for Costa Nord which has always been a non-starter. He is also a major fan of that other island Bermuda where he has invested heavily. But despite some of the drawbacks signing up Michael Douglas is still a major coup and Balearic President Jaume Matas should be congratulated for pulling off the biggest signing of the tourist industry. In a world which is celebrity mad having a big star attached to your name is always good news. And the good thing about Douglas is that he does love Majorca. He has owned a house here for more than 15 years and he has been a regular visitor for two decades. He has already done plenty of good for the island. His involvement is now being taken a step further. “If it good enough for Michael Douglas, it is good enough for me...” will be the general consensus of opinion of the majority of tourists. And also, we are not just talking about Douglas. A certain Catherine Zeta Jones will certainly do her bit for the Balearics also.
This deal will add something very important for the Balearics...star quality.
