Palma fire brigade said yesterday that its engineers believe that the cause of last week's tragic hotel collapse which killed two builders was caused by excess weight on breeze block walls. According to a report published by the Palma City Council, the breeze block supporting walls could not withstand the weight of the three storey building. The council also stated that breeze blocks are not an authorised material for the construction of supporting walls. The report also reveals that engineers discovered evidence to suggest that the breeze block walls supported the entire weight of the building as the pillars on the ground floor were made of concrete and would have been unable to hold up the structure alone.
