By Humphrey Carter LORENZO Quinn's “controversial” sculpture along the Paseo Maritimo in Palma was yesterday damaged when a “speeding” driver lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into the base of the large piece of art unveiled just a few months ago. The actual sculpture by the son of actor Anthony Quinn is not controversial in itself, merely the location, at the foot of Sa Faixina park on the busy Paseo Marítimo-Avda Argentina traffic junction. The piece entitled “Encuentros” is a giant glass globe with a huge hand inside, and has not met with the approval of various Palma art bodies and organisations, sparking a public debate over whether or not the sculpture should actually be moved to a new site “more suited” for the piece of modern art. The accident happened at 4am yesterday morning when 32-year-old Mexican Fabian Agustin L.D., driving too fast according to the police, lost control of his Alfa Romeo as he turned off the Paseo towards Avenida Argentina. The car shot across the road, up the grassy knoll, taking out an advertising board on the way, and into the base of the sculpture, smashing various panes of the glass in the globe and damaging the base of the piece of art. Local Police and an ambulance rushed to the scene and the driver was taken to Son Dureta hospital where he was examined by doctors before being treated for minor injuries.
