Bring a toy

ALARO
T HE Orengar Cultural and Sporting Association has organised an event at the indoor sports centre this coming Sunday, in aid of underprivileged children.

There will be three indoor football matches where every spectator will have to donate a toy instead of purchasing an entrance ticket.
The collection of toys will go to Alaro Social Services and Children's centres around Majorca.
Not a drop

VILAFRANCA
O N Wednesday morning, all the residents in Vilafranca fell prey to a cut in the water supply. Town Hall sources explained that on the very same day when some houses in calle Sant Marti were being connected to the drainage network, the supply circuit broke on the Son Pastor water storage area. Faced with angry complaints, the Town Hall gave reassurances that the supply would not fail again.

Cycle route

ISLAND WIDE
THE Council of Majorca wants to create a major cycling route which would link up the municipalities which form part of the North and South Communities of the Island. The project would be backed by the central government ministry of Public Administration, the Council of Majorca, and local authorities.

The North and South Communities presented separate draft projects to the Council of Majorca for the cycle route in their respective areas. Domingo Bonnin, director of Local Cooperation on the Council, said that the idea is to link up the two projects which would mean a global investment of around 4 to 4.5 million euros.

Presently, it has not been firmed up how the two cycle route programmes would be linked up but it could possibly be on country roads in the municipality of Manacor. CIM sources say the work could begin next year.

Seasonal rubbish

FELANITX, INCA, ES PLA
T HE company responsible for rubbish collection and street cleaning in Felanitx, Inca, and the fourteen towns of the Pla (Plain) communities of Majorca, has guaranteed a full service over Christmas.

Fifty-five workers from Cespa S.A. had recently threatened through channels in the General Workers' Union (UGT), to start an indefinite strike as of 21 December at 8pm. Were this stoppage to have gone ahead, it would have meant real chaos for the districts affected.

However, earlier this week, the mayors of Felanitx and Llubi reported that the company had reached an agreement with the work force, thereby enabling them to guarantee a Christmas service.

New nurseries

MANACOR
THE Socialist Opposition group on Manacor Town Council has proposed an amendment to the regional budget by calling for one million euros to be allocated to the construction of four new infant nurseries: one in Porto Cristo, one in Calas de Mallorca, one in S'Illot and another in Manacor.

The Socialists are also asking for funds for three Day Centres, a Youth Centre and for restoration work to convert convent buildings into a Cultural centre in Manacor.

Theme Park war

CALVIA
THEME park promoters, the “Mallorca Theme Park Group” (TPG), believe that the lands at Can Vairet, property of the Nigorra family, located between Son Ferrer and El Toro in Calvia, have all the prerequisites for enabling their project to go ahead. The company claims that their plans are “environmentally sustainable and compatible with the needs of the community”.

The scheme, however, has met with opposition from Socialist groups and Neighbourhood Associations in Son Ferrer, who have set up a protest platform, SOS Can Vairet.
