Staff reporter THE Balearics has won the El Niño lottery on six previous occasions and ticket holders are hoping for a slice of the 560.000.000 euro winnings up for grabs in today's lottery draw.

13.40 euros has been spent per person on El Niño lottery tickets in the Balearics this year with each ticket costing 20 euros. The top prize is 1.600.000 (divided into 12 tickets) with a second prize of 800.000 euros.

The El Niño draw starts at mid-day and will last just 30 minutes, much less than the El Gordo (Fat One) on December 22 which lasts a marathon three hours.

Majorca proved lucky on the Fat One with part of the jackpot landing in Muro, although the tickets were bought in the town of Sort in Lerida on the mainland. Thousands of Majorcans are hoping that Lady Luck will shine on the island again today.

All of the El Niño tickets on sale at the outlet which sold the winning Fat One in Sort were sold out on January 3 with many of the tickets being bought over the internet. Xavier Gabriel, who owns the “La Bruixa d'Or” (“The Golden witch”) lottery outlet in Sort said yesterday that half of their El Niño tickets have been sold over the internet this year. It is predicted that today's winning ticket will end in the number 2.
