News Desk T HE total sales in the Balearic shops during the sales period, which began on 7 January and will finish on 7 March, were very similar to the volume of sales that were registered at the same time last year, said Bartomeu Servera, the President of Afedeco (business federation). “The volume of sales is very similar”, said Servera, who added that the arrival of these results is important “as there are significant changes” in some sectors of the market. Furthermore, he noted that the top discounts offered this year reached 70 percent. Shoes and clothes were the highest selling items during the sales in the Balearics.

It is expected that total sales during this period will reach around 50 million euros, but Servera said that the exact results will not be known until after the sales period has ended on 8 March and a thorough survey has been completed.

The President of Pimeco, the small and medium businesses organisation, Angel Pujol also said that the exact data will be available on 8 March after “a more complete survey” has been carried out.

The President of Afedeco emphasized that the sales during this season began “spectaculary well” which only goes to prove the phenomenon where “shoppers have learnt to wait and save their money until the sales begin”.

On the other hand, these sales are “not good” for any sector, said Servera, as the shops are selling the same stock at a reduced price and this only acts to liquidate shop stocks. “When you sell a lot during the sales it means that you have not sold much at the normal non-sales price”, he added.
