News Desk THE Head of Public Works at the Council of Majorca, Antoni Pascual, said yesterday that the members of the Council would be “delighted” if the central Government abolished the rulings on the toll for using the Soller tunnel, but for now he added that he can do no more than revise the charges on an annual basis.

Antoni Pascual made these declarations during a council meeting in response to demands by the spokesperson for the Majorcan Socialist Party (PSM), Antoni Alorda.

Alorda was asking that the central Government stops imposing a toll on the Soller tunnel so that residents in Majorca do not have to pay to use it. In his opinion, the central Government must fund the tunnel and not those that live here.

The Head of Public Works said that he would be delighted if this happened, but for now the only necessary thing to be done is the annual revision of the tunnel tariffs, as has been stipulated in the transfer agreement between the Council of Majorca and the Balearic Government.

During the annual revision meeting that was held yesterday, the following tariffs were agreed: 1.60 euros for Category 1 vehicles (motorbikes and mopeds), 4 euros for Category 2 (cars), 6.25 euros for Category 3 (coaches and lorries) and 7.10 euros for Category 4 (vehicles with trailer).

With regards to the residents, the tariffs for the first and second categories will remain the same as last year (0'40 and 1 euro respectively). However the tunnel tariffs for the third and fourth categories will increase to 1.60 and 1 euros respectively.

Also at this meeting an agreement to develop sports in Marratxi was agreed yesterday.
In this way a group made up of the Council of Majorca, the Social Services and Sports Institute and the Marratxi town council will join forces to improve sports and sporting facilities in the area.
