News desk GREENPEACE has warned of what it calls the “high risk” to Majorca of the visit by the U.S. aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, which is due into port today.

A spokesman said that she is a nuclear powered ship and “there is no reason which justified the presence of two nuclear reactors in the bay of Palma.” He added “we hope that the authorities will prevent the presence of this ship and any other which may have nuclear reactors or weapons.” The Roosevelt is on manoeuvres in collaboration with the Spanish Navy.
It is the first visit of a ship of this type since May 2001, when the Enterprise was here.
Prior to the Enterprise, Palma received a visit from the aircraft carrier George Washington in December 2000 and the Roosevelt in June 1999.
The Nimitz class Roosevelt is a floating city with a crew of more than 6'200 and about 100 planes including F-18 Hornets, F-14 Tomcats, E2-C Hawkeyes and EA-6B Prowlers.

She has an unlimited range and a top speed of 32 knots.
