MADRID THE Balearic Islands have had official notice from national weather watchers that the region is to be battered by very strong winds throughout today. Majorca is expected to be prepared for violent gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour, particularly in the central areas of the island and in the south.

The coastal waters are expected to be particularly rough especially around Minorca. The Public Works and Services department of the Council of Majorca has had its hands full after days of gale force weather with no less than 119 calls for repair work to be carried out on public roads and infrastructure.

Some 200 operatives and technicians are “out on the job” making sure that maximum safety conditions prevail for drivers. Key tasks have included removing fallen rocks from roadways where terrain has subsided and clearing fallen trees and branches which have prohibited the passage of traffic.
