SPEAKER of the Balearic Parliament, Maria Antonia Munar, said yesterday that 2008 “hasn't been such a good year” - alluding in part due to the economic crisis and also to the fact that five MPs are appearing in Court on corruption-related matters. Munar, speaking at the traditional Christmas parliamentary toast, said she hoped that the New Year would not continue the trend. During her speech, Munar quipped that “experts” had suggested that the combination of economic crisis and corruption had been written in the stars. “Whether it is or not,” she said, “I don't know but the United Nations are designating 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy.” Munar hoped the New Year would see better days for all MPs.
