PALMA
THE leader of the conservative Partido Popular opposition party here in the Balearics, Rosa Estaras, yesterday launched a fresh attack on regional President Francesc Antich and demanded that he appear before parliament early in the New Year to answer a number of serious and important questions about his government's policy.

Last week, Antich boldly proclaimed that the Balearics is just a day away from being given greater economic powers by central government but, while the PP opposition in Madrid are doing all it can to block new regional finance policy, Estaras called on Antich to publicly explain exactly what the new Balearic model will consist of and how it is going to work.

The PP, both here and in Madrid, believe that, in view of the current economic climate, now is not the time to be juggling about with public funding and Estaras fears that Antich's government is incapable of keeping its finances in order.

She yesterday accused the local government of having thrown the region into record levels of debt.
