Palma.—The City Council meeting held yesterday proposed new tariffs for the public cycle service “Bicipalma” to be introduced in May or June this year.

A major attraction for regular users is that the Council is offering a 50 percent discount for yearly use if the season ticket is purchased in 2012. This means that those who are in possession of the Palma citizens' card will be able to get an annual permit for just 12 euros.

Transport Councillor Gabriel Vallejo said that the aim is to attract as many users as possible and encourage the use of the bicycle as an alternative means of transport in the city.

Single journey tickets will not be available because of technical difficulties but 4 euros will buy a monthly ticket for Palma citizens' card holders, 9 euros a 3-month ticket, 14 euros for a half-year ticket; 24 euros for an annual permit; 9 euros 3-day tourist ticket and 12 euros for a 5-day tourist ticket.

The council is going to take credit card details from users so that 150 euros will be charged if the bike is not returned in good working order. Vallejo said that with qualified staff, maintenance will now improve.
