Palma.—Guardia Civil officers collaborated closely with both Local and National Police in an operation which lasted over Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The task force swept down Avenida de Magaluf and then through Calle Ros García, Pinada and s'Olivera. It is these areas particularly where prostitutes from the Subsahara had been gathering in anticipation of the coming summer season, approaching people who had been drinking on the way back to their hotels. Tourist businesses in the area had repeatedly complained.

The prostitutes usually use the technique of surrounding a drunk tourist, lulling him into a false sense of security until he realises too late that his wallet is gone.

Another method is to agree a price for sex with the victim and whilst in the act, a group of prostitutes would assault him and run off with all the money they could find.

The prostitutes apparently keep contact with their colleagues via mobile phone and warn each other when they see police patrols approaching.
Despite all the difficulties, the weekend operation succeeded in identifying over 30 of the women. The prostitutes were taken to the police station for their details to be registered and those who had previously been picked up by police for soliciting were arrested. One of them was charged with stealing a wallet from a victim that particular evening. Yesterday, the women were taken to HQ in Palma where their cases were investigated by the Foreigners' Office.
