Palma.— The electricity supply company in the Balearics, Endesa, has confirmed that residents and businesses in Palma who were adversely affected by the cut in supply on Saturday night and which lasted into Sunday morning, will be compensated by discounts on their bills in the first quarter of 2013.

The lights went out over a good part of Palma at around 8pm on Saturday and didn't go on again in some areas, including Portopí until 6 o'clock the next day. Endesa said in a statement yesterday that the electricity supply is “neither infiniete nor infallible” and that therefore compensation will be made. A spokesman added that discounts in bills early next year will be made automatically and that there is no need for individuals to make application unless it is for some excessive loss as a result of the power outage.

As a temporary measure, Endesa has set up a mobile electricity substation which is supplying energy to Santa Catalina, but the spokesman said it will be about a month before the cause of the blackout is known.
