A group of residents in the Andratx neighbourhood of sa Taulera held a demonstration on Thursday evening to protest at the town council's decision to locate a new industrial estate on their doorstep.

The siting of the industrial estate affects some 20 families, representatives of whom have already lodged official complaints with Andratx council. Residents said they were not against the building of the estate in principle but the site chosen for it will eat up the only remaining green area in Sa Taula. “Local authorities have already destroyed our old theatre and town square,” one neighbour complained.

It was last year when Andratx town council started putting the paperwork in order to build the new industrial estate, planning to have it finished by the end of 2015. If the project goes ahead, the land will house some 60 or 70 industrial units.

The estate has been designed to house the small businesses, currently located within the town of Andratx and in the Port. The local council had believed that the relocation of light industry would leave the centre of the town and the port free for residents and tourists.
