Palma.—Majorca Daily Bulletin columnist Hugh Ash has scooped the coveted “Freshly Pressed” award from WordPress, the most popular blogging system on the world-wide-web. The former Fleet Street newsman's blog News From The Mallorca Pier has recorded over 10'000 hits since Hugh launched it last April with hundreds of readers from around the world logging onto it daily. The blog, with its pungent and plain-speaking “take” on everything from world affairs to the mysterious ways of budget airlines has become a remarkable success story and has turned Manchester born Ash into one of the leading lights on the blogosphere.

Hugh, whose Sunday Telegraph exclusive first exposed John Hirst – dubbed Majorca's Madoff – and helped jail the 10 million pound conman, said “The idea for the blog came from my agent in London, who thought it would, in her words, improve my social media profile.” Portals based Hugh is in the process of penning his third Majorca based thriller novel, so at first he wasn't sure if a blog would be the right thing to do… “I wasn't too enchanted with the idea of starting a blog. But the more I wrote, the more hooked on it I became and the WordPress award was a shot right out of the blue.” As a regular guest speaker at clubs and schools on the island, Hugh encourages everyone to have a go at writing. He explained. “Writing is a highly liberating experience, one that really tests your faculties, it doesn't have to be a blog or newspaper column and you don't have to be a great wordsmith. Just write something, like a diary or preferably a short autobiography, especially if you are my vintage.” Before moving to the island with his wife Barbara in 2002 to become Fleet Street's “Man in Majorca,” Hugh Ash after a varied career, was a senior executive on several UK national newspaper titles in a variety of editing and writing roles.
