PALMA City Council yesterday pledged 120'000 euros to the Haiti earthquake emergency fund after the City Councillor for Social Welfare, Eberhard Grosske, held a meeting with the coordinator of Balearic ONGs.

During the meeting it was agreed that the funds will be made immediately available and a series of other short to mid term aid measures were also discussed. The municipal water and refuse company, Emaya, has also made a number of old street cleaning vehicles available to the Majorcan Solidarity Fund for their deployment to Haiti.

MAJORCAN FIRE FIGHTERS

An Emaya source said that vehicles are no longer in service and can also be used to transport people. Four Majorcan fire fighters which are members of the international Bombers Sense Frontiers aid organisation are also preparing to fly out to Haiti as soon as possible.

The Majorcan Solidarity Fund (Fons Mallorqui de Solidaritat) has raised over 10'000 euros and the Majorcan fire fighters will use that to build and man a special field hospital as well as put up between 20 and 30 tents for the homeless.
