STAFF REPORTER THE Speaker of the Balearic Parliament, Maria Antonia Munar, turned up for her midday court appearance in Palma yesterday but exercised her constitutional right to remain silent.

Munar, the Honourary President of the Majorca Unionist party and former President of the Council of Majorca, had been summoned to answer questions relating to an investigation in to the alleged misappropriation of public funds by members of the Council of Majorca during her legislature. “Operacion maquillaje” (Operation make up) is separate to the ongoing and much wider investigation into the Son Oms alleged urban property scandal which also involves members of the former Council of Majorca and the Majorcan Unionist party.

However, as Munar's legal team indicated on Thursday, she was in court for less than five minutes and exercised her right to only make a statement before the Balearic High Court if clear charges are officially pressed against her.

Munar also refused to talk to the awaiting pack of journalists on leaving court yesterday.
