PALMA
THE former cannabis smuggler who was arrested in Majorca in 1988, Howard Marks, always knew that one day his internationally best selling book Mr Nice would be made into a film but he said a series of “legal problems” would have to have been sorted out first.

Well, it is not going to be long now before Mr Nice, the movie, hits cinema screens.
Mr. Nice is based on Marks' autobiography of the same title. Marks had a 20-year career smuggling cannabis after studying and graduating from Bailiol College in Oxford, the University of London and the University of Sussex.

Marks cultivated ties with the Irish Republican Army and eventually became a spy for Britain. Marks, and his now ex-wife Judy, were eventually arrested at their home here in La Vileta in a major international police operation which involved the DEA coming from the States to Palma to take part in the arrest.

After being extradited he spent seven years of a 25-year sentence in prison in the United States.
On his release, he returned to Majorca and gave his first interview to the Daily Bulletin.
