THE number of jobless in the region will most probably rise again this month, although not by as much as the same time last year, said regional Employment Minister, Joana Barcelo, yesterday.

She pointed out that it is usual for January and February unemployment figures to go up in the Balearics. Her remarks followed hot on the heels of an announcement by Central Government's Employment Minister, Celestino Corbacho, yesterday in which he said that this year's unemployment figures for January on a nationwide scale will echo those recorded in the same month in 2007 and 2008 when figures were up by 60'000 and 132'000 respectively. Such statistics, Corbacho claimed, are a vast improvement on the increase of those out of work in January 2009 which numbered 200'000.

At the end of last year in the Balearics, said Barcelo, there was a total of 91'098 people out of work, a 17'800 rise on the same period the previous year, an increase of 24.28 percent.
