Palma.—The Palma fire brigade announced yesterday that they would no longer get involved in house evictions. More than 400'000 people have lost their homes in Spain since the start of the property crisis and the police and fire brigade have been involved in numerous evictions.

But the fire brigade said yesterday that they are an emergency service whose main aim is to help the public and protect their property. “House evictions because of non-payment of the mortgage does not fall into this category and therefore we have decided not to get involved,” said a fire brigade spokesperson yesterday. In some parts of Spain even police officers are refusing to help with home evictions despite direct orders from their superiors. Four people have taken their life this month in Spain after they lost their homes.
