PALMA Council is to increase the number of mediators working with newly-arrived immigrants in the city after signing a 555'000 euro deal with the Balearic Department of Social Affairs, Promotion and Immigration.

Announcing the details of the deal, Eberhard Grosske of Palma Council said 350'000 euros would go towards intercultural mediation, while 250'000 euros would go towards information, advice and orientation for immigrants.

Eight new mediators will be appointed to work with immigrant associations to facilitate better integration into the community. Among the main aims of the council is to help the integration process and get recently-arrived immigrants involved in existing immigrant associations.

Fina Santiago, the Balearic Minister for Immigration, said that the Office of Information and Orientation offered information about the social welfare system, labour rights and employment opportunities.
