A 54-year-old Palma man was last night fighting for his life after suffering severe burns to 95 percent of his body in a powerful gas explosion at his home yesterday morning.

The explosion happened at his second-floor, calle Fausto Morell, apartment at 8.25am and the victim was rushed to Son Dureta hospital in a critical condition where he was stabilised before being airlifted to the special burns unit at Vall d´Ebron in Barcelona.

The building was momentarily evacuated while fire fighters extinguished the blaze in the apartment and engineers inspected the property.
The bulk of damage, however, was caused to the victim's flat. A full investigation has been opened after a butane bottle of gas was found in the victim's bedroom with the door closed leading investigators to suspect that the blast may have been caused intentionally. The bottle was open and is believed to have been the cause of the massive build up of gas in the property which exploded showering the street below with glass.

One neighbour told investigators that the victim had been behaving strangely of late - he recently threw a television set out of the window.
The Mayor of Palma Catalina Cirer rushed to the scene to be briefed on the situation by police and fire chiefs as residents were allowed to return to their homes in the block after it was deemed safe and secure.
