STAFF REPORTER THE Majorcan Railway Service (SFM) is taking important steps to upgrade track safety on the Inca, Manacor and Sa Pobla train routes. SFM Managing Director, Jaume Jaume, said yesterday that at the last Board Meeting seven key projects were minuted. The railway service, which comes under the umbrella of the regional Transport ministry, is financing them to the tune of 3.7 million euros in conjunction with funding from Central Government. One of the schemes consists of improving signalling along the railway line, a task which needs to be carried out at regular intervals. Another is the inclusion of the stretch of track between s'Enllaç and Sa Pobla within the automatic control hub at Palma's central station. The centre keeps a finger on the pulse of all train activity up and down the line and allows the number of trains running to be increased. Jaume said great emphasis will be placed on improving security at level crossings - guaranteeing the safety of those crossing the tracks is of prime importance. He added that complaints about train delays will fade when the new electrification programme comes into being.
