Palma.—Since the end of December, 7'619 foreign residents have taken out Spanish nationality here in the Balearics while a total 238'820 have taken out Spanish nationality nationwide.

Most of the applications date back to 2009 which is why the Attorney General gave the order for the system to be fast tracked in the middle of last year to deal with the back log of applicants.

By Nationality, the highest number of applications has come from the Ecuadorian community, followed by the Colombians, Moroccans, Peruvians and Bolivians.

However since the surge in applications in 2009, there has apparently been a steady decline with an increasing number of South American immigrants returning home because of the recession and lack of jobs.
