AN activity programme celebrating International Astronomy year was launched yesterday in Palma with the help of a mobile planetarium.
The multimedia “road show” will tour the Balearics exhibiting the early telescopes used by astronomy pioneers, Galileo, Newton and others. The Director of Majorca's Observatory, Salvador Sanchez, explained that the mobile planetarium will tour the region for the next year. The aim is to use digital technology to give astronomical science a wider public appeal. Part of the attractions will include highly specialised telescopes which will enable visitors to watch the sun, the moon, stars and planets. The planetarium itself consists of a retractable dome and has capacity for 60 people.
