A year ago a group of Majorcans promoted the creation of a National Comic Prize. Now part of the same group has proposed the creation of an Academia de la Historietaor Comic Strip Academy.

The first steps were taken last week in Granada during the Salon del Comic for that area, although the meeting which will actually found the institution will take place on April 20 in Barcelona, coinciding with the Salon del Comic there.

A managing commission was set up in Granada to promote the meeting on April 20, which should bring together “all sectors of the comic world, illustrators, editors and scriptwriters, etc.”, according to Joan Miquel Morey, of Norma Comics and one of the members of the Commission.

During the first meeting it was agreed that “the general aim and priority of the academy will be the defence, promotion and growth of comic strips, and of professionals in this medium”, confirmed Morey.

The powers of the managing commission were also defined as “to get the maximum amount of professionals to attend the meeting on April 20, to organise the meeting and to collect proposals from the professionals focussed on how the creation of this new organisation should be handled”.
