PALMA
LOCAL historians in Porreres are searching for the exact spot where 300 Republicans shot during the Civil War were buried in a mass grave.
The Republicans were shot against the exterior wall of the Iglesia de la Creu. One possible location of the grave is under a wall that was built as part of an extension to the cemetery in the 1950s that contains a number of burial spaces.

The Association for the Recuperation of Historical Memory in Majorca (ARMHM) has signed a deal with the University of the Balearic Islands to carry out DNA tests with descendants of those who were shot to verify any remains found in the cemetery in Porreres.

The plan is still in its early stages, however, and its proponents still need the permission of the municipal council and the Council of Majorca's Heritage Commission to carry it out.

They also need the permission of the owners of the spaces in the wall under which they believe the bodies are buried.
