STAFF REPORTER MAJORCA'S Catholic charity, Caritas, said yesterday that during the first four months of this year, it attended to the needs of 2'246 people, 54.3 percent more than the work it carried out during the same period in 2008.

Caritas General Secretary, Margalida Maria Riutort said that the economic crisis has doubled the number of families who are at risk. The majority of calls for help this year she said were related to keeping up payments on housing, legal aid, food subsidies, and psychological counselling for family conflict. She added that more single people, unable to share the burden of expenses, have appealed to Caritas this year.
