THE Ministry for Defence has agreed to sell the 111.000 square metre site of the old Ses Busquets barracks along the Valldemossa road to the local authorities on the proviso it is used for the development of cheap housing. The Minister for defence Bono presented local authorities with a development project in Palma yesterday.
The Ministry's project involves the construction of 1.590 properties, 52 percent of which must be council housing.
Bono said that the project has been drawn up to help Palma residents find housing and added that the plans include a site for a school and a residential home for the elderly. The Balearic government and Palma city council wanted to use the site entirely for council housing, but José Bono stipulated yesterday that his ministry has devised a project which will benefit all Palma residents wanting to get on the property ladder, especially those on low incomes and with limited financial resources.
