THE owners of the boatyard destroyed by fire in the Port of Alcudia on Monday evening were yesterday trying to comes to terms with the disaster and count the cost of the blaze which sparked a major emergency operation. Fire swept through the Bennassar warehouse just after 7pm and, although fire fighters had the blaze under control within 90 minutes, fire fighters were still at the scene yesterday morning helping the clean up operation. The Bennassar family are very famous local llaüt builders and a number of boats were destroyed by the fire which, not only gutted the Bennassar yard, but also damaged a number of neighbouring warehouses. The Guardia Civil yesterday opened a full investigation into the cause of the fire which started long after the boat yard had closed for the day. The Bennassar family are very well known in Alcudia and yesterday a large number of friends visited the scene of the blaze to inspect the damage and offer their support for the family.
