Palma.—Nine months has passed since work first began on the Casino de Mallorca in Porto Pi and there are just weeks to go now before the spectacular venue opens its doors to the general public.

Since building first commenced, the best part of eight million euros has already been invested in the project which is expected to generate an annual turn- over of at least 14 million euros. The new casino will cover an area of 3'000 square metres with a maximum capacity for 800 people in the gambling halls, restaurant and two bars.

The casino will employ a total of 150 staff, 45 more than the current Casino de Mallorca in Calvia and also offer facilities for private functions and celebrations.

Yesterday, during the presentation of the project, the Director of the Casino de Mallorca, said that once the new gambling halls are open in Palma, the theatres, function and ballrooms will remain in operation at the old casino.

He explained that the emphasis will be on promoting the old site as a convention and business centre as well as a place for weddings, private functions and gala shows such as Come Fly With Me which it currently hosts.
