The President of the Balearics, Jose Ramon Bauza, yesterday told, delegates attending the Mediterranean Coast Guard Functions Forum in Palma that the Balearics “are one of the safest destinations in Spain if not the Mediterranean.” His comments came just 24 hours after the Central Government Delegate to the Balearics, Teresa Palmer, made a similar statement in response to the article published in Germany's top selling newspaper last Sunday which claimed that Majorca is over run with “swindlers, pickpockets and cheap prostitutes”.

The article entitled Majorca's Darkest Hour sent shock waves through the local and national tourist industry but while the Balearic authorities have been relatively quiet on the issue, the security forces have been very proactive in trying to ease the concerns of potential visitors by issuing tweets in English and in German stating that they are ready and waiting to look after them while on holiday. “Every Summer security is stepped up in the Balearics, but sadly some people will always says it's never enough,” Bauza said.
